GEM presents the first ever solo exhibition given by Jana Gunstheimer (b. 1974) in the Netherlands. Her detailed black-and-white drawings have a documentary look but prove on closer inspection to describe a kind of shadow reality. Combined with various props and objects, they conjure up a hallucinatory world of constant destabilization. For this exhibition at the GEM, the artist is creating a brand new installation that will take the viewer on a journey through the human brain – a brain that is the scene of constant struggle: good vs. evil, reality vs. illusion, the believable vs. the unbelievable, and reason vs. emotion.
Like Marcel van Eeden, Charles Avery, Marcel Dzama and some other previous exhibitors at the GEM, Jana Gunstheimer takes drawing as her point of departure. She creates entire worlds in her drawings and, although props, objects and other constellations play a major role in her work, they all seem to derive directly from the world of her drawings.
